The replays and sectional times have been reviewed from Saturday’s Scone and Doomben meetings. Our analyst has found a lightly raced Hawkes 4yo that looks set to progress nicely through the grades.
Spione
The lightly raced Hawkes 4yo looks like one we can follow through the grades with the right gate and conditions after he took his career record to 5: 3-1-0. He was forced to settle last from the wide gate but Schiller was able to turn it into a positive getting him down the outside to score a 1.2L win. The overall time wasn’t flash as it was 0.36 seconds slower than the mares in the following race. The Heavy conditions can be cause to looks past that. He looks likely to progress out to a mile but would be better suited with drawing decent barrier with his lack of early speed. He will continue to improve with more racing.Â

The G1 Doomben Cup winner looks read to step up against the best WFA horses after a dominant 3.9L win on Saturday. He will now be aimed at the Cox Plate in the spring in what shapes as a mouth watering clash with Via Sistina. I don’t know whether he is good enough to beat her but there is still plenty of water to go under the bridge between now and then and it will be great viewing regardless.Â
