The 2020 ATP awards were presented on Monday, and two of the most notable awards were won by Andrey Rublev of Russia and Vasek Pospisil of Canada. Rublev won the 2020 ATP Most Improved Player of the Year, and Pospisil won the 2020 ATP Comeback Player of the Year according to the ATP Tour on Monday.

Rublev moved from 23rd in the world to eighth in the ATP rankings in 2020. He posted a record of 41 wins, and 10 losses, won five tournaments, and reached the quarterfinals of two grand slams–the U.S. Open and the French Open. The five tournaments Rublev won were the Qatar Open, the Adelaide International, the Hamburg European Open, the St. Petersburg Open, and the Vienna Open.

The players Rublev beat in the five finals were Corentin Moutet of France in Doha (6-2, 7-6), Lloyd Harris of South Africa in Adelaide (6-3, 6-0), Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece in Hamburg (6-4, 3-6, 7-5), Borna Coric of Croatia in St. Petersburg (7-6, 6-4), and Lorenzo Sonego of Italy (6-4, 6-4) in Vienna. Rublev has now won seven ATP career events overall.

In addition to beating Tsitsipas in the final of Hamburg, Rublev beat two other top-10 players in 2020. He defeated Matteo Berrettini of Italy in the fourth round of the United States Open, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3, and Dominic Thiem of Austria twice. Rublev’s first win over Thiem was a 7-6, 6-2 win in the quarterfinals of Vienna, and then he beat Thiem again 6-2, 7-5 at the ATP Finals in London.

Pospisil meanwhile moved from 150th in the world to 61st in the ATP rankings. The native of Vernon, British Columbia played tennis at a high level after having back surgery in 2019. He reached the finals of Montpellier (lost to Gael Monfils of France), and Sofia (lost to Jannik Sinner of Italy).

Pospisil beat two top 10 players in 2020. He defeated David Goffin of Belgium in the semifinals of Montpellier, 6-3, 1-6, 7-5, and then Daniil Medvedev of Russia in the first round of Rotterdam, 6-4, 6-3.
