Alexander Zverev withdraws from the 2022 United States Open

According to Victoria Chiesa of usopen.org, 2020 United States Open finalist Alexander Zverev of Hamburg, Germany is going to miss the 2022 United States Open because of an ankle injury. Zverev tore three ligaments in his ankle during the semifinal of the 2022 French Open.

Initially it was determined that Zverev would be out six to eight weeks at the beginning of June, which would have put him at the late August, early September time frame for the 2022 United States Open. However, the ankle has not healed in time and it will be interesting to see what Zverev’s tennis schedule will look like once his ankle is better.

Zverev is currently ranked second in the world, only behind Daniil Medvedev of Russia in the wonky ATP rankings. Remember, that Zverev is still second in the world even though he has not played since June, has not won the ATP Tour in 2022, and the results from Wimbledon due not count at all, as the ATP opposed Wimbledon’s decision not to allow tennis players from Russia or Belarus to participate.

It should be noted that Zverev is not the only high profile tennis player not playing the 2022 United States Open. The other is the giant, 6’11” Reilly Opelka. The 24-year-old from St. Joseph, Michigan has not played the entire month of August. It is interesting that no reason was given for Opelka’s withdrawal.

Opelka has won two tournaments in the United States already in 2022. First he beat Jenson Brooksby of Sacramento, California in the final of the Dallas Open in February, 7-6, 7-6. Then Opelka beat fellow American and 2018 Wimbledon semifinalist John Isner of Greensboro, North Carolina 6-3, 7-6 in the United States Men’s Clay Court Championship in Houston, Texas.

With the withdrawals of Opelka and Zverev, two Americans were granted entrance into the main draw. They were Jack Sock of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Stefan Kozlov of Pembroke Pines, Florida.
