Alexander Zverev does not have criminal record after settlement with ex-girlfriend

Reigning Olympic gold medalist, 2020 United States Open finalist and 2024 French Open finalist Alexander Zverev of Germany has had a lot going on this past week, and it has not all been on the tennis court in France. In his home country of Germany, Zverev was involved in a high-profile court case where he was allegedly accused of choking and pushing his former partner according to the Associated Press.

However on Friday, Zverev’s lawyers were able to reach an out of court settlement with German prosecutors. Zverev has reportedly agreed to pay a fine of 150,000 euros and make a donation to 50,000 euros to charitable organizations. It was also determined that Zverev will not have a criminal record from the incident. According to the New York Times and the Athletic, “a decision reached under Section 153a means that no entry is made into Germany’s Federal Central Criminal Register.”

Zverev has won six matches in Roland Garros over the last two weeks despite these legal proceedings. His first round win was very high profile, as he beat 14-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal of Spain, 6-3, 7-6, 6-3. That was followed by a 7-6, 6-2, 6-2 second round win over David Goffin of Belgium, a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 third round win over 26th seed Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands, a 4-6, 6-1, 5-7, 7-6, 6-2 fourth round win over 13th seed Holger Rune of Denmark, a 6-4. 7-6, 6-4 quarterfinal win over Alex de Minaur of Australia and a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 semifinal win over three-time grand slam finalist Casper Ruud of Norway. Ruud made the grand slam final at the 2022 and 2023 French Open, and the 2022 United States Open.

It will now be interesting to see if there will be any disciplinary action by the ATP Tour or the International Tennis Federation against Zverev. Over the next two months we have Wimbledon and the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
