May 21, 2024

Xander Schauffele of San Diego, California is the 2024 PGA Championship winner. However, what he accomplished over the last four days at the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky was a record-setting performance. Schauffele posted a four-round score of -21, the best 72 hole score ever at a major championship, for his first career major title.
Schauffele had a first round result of -9, which was tied for the best score ever in a major for a single round. He followed that up with a second round score of -3, and a third round score of -3.
In the fourth round, Schauffele shot a score of six-under-par 65. He had seven birdies and one bogey for his round. Schauffele birdied the first, fourth, seventh, ninth, 11th, 12th, and 18th holes, and bogeyed the 10th hole.
Schauffele’s birdie on the 18th hole won him the PGA Championship. As Schauffele approached the 18th hole, he was tied with fellow Californian and 2020 United States Open champion Bryson DeChambeau of Modesto. As Schauffele posted a score of four on the 18th hole, DeChambeau had to settle for second place and a four round score of -20. The only other golfer in contention was Norway’s Viktor Hovland, who was in third place at -18.
Prior to Schauffele making history, five other golfers posted scores of -20. In addition to DeChambeau at the 2024 PGA Championship, Jason Day of Australia was -20 at the 2015 PGA Championship, Henrik Stenson of Sweden was -20 at the 2016 British Open, Dustin Johnson of the United States was -20 at the 2020 Masters, and Cameron Smith of Australia was -20 at the 2022 British Open.
