The Washington Wizards have come through with the biggest upset of the 2025-26 National Basketball Association regular season. On Thursday, the Wizards were a 17 point underdog, but stunned the Detroit Pistons 126-117.
The previous biggest upset this season came on January 23. That is when the Indiana Pacers beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 117-114 as a 15.5 point underdog.Â
In the Wizards win over the Pistons, this was only Washington’s fifth win all season on the road. They improved to a record of 14 wins and 36 losses.
The Wizards win was a strong team victory with an impressive balanced offensive attack among the starters, and those coming off the bench. Eight Wizards reached double digits in points. Canadian small forward Will Riley of Cambridge, Ontario led the Wizards in scoring with 20 points. The other seven Wizards to reach double digits in scoring were point guard Sharife Cooper of Newark, New Jersey (18 points), center Tristan Vukcevic of Siena, Italy (14 points), small forward Justin Champagnie of Brooklyn, New York (14 points), center Alex Sarr of Bordeaux, France (12 points), point guard Bub Carrington of Baltimore, Maryland (12 points), shooting guard Bilal Coulibaly of Saint-Cloud, France (11 points), and power forward Anthony Gill of High Point, North Carolina (11 points).
Washington got out to a great start, as they outscored Detroit 34-21. To put Washington’s win into perspective, they are currently 13th in the Eastern Conference with a winning percentage of only .280. The only two teams worse than the Wizards are the Brooklyn Nets (13 and 37), and the Indiana Pacers (13 and 39). In other Wizards news, it is expected that newly acquired Wizard Anthony Davis will miss the rest of the regular season as he recovers from various injuries.
