Winx Crushes Rivals In Apollo Stakes To Make It 30 Straight Wins

February 16, 2019

By Lindsay

Champion mare Winx has recorded her 30th straight victory with a dominant win in the Apollo Stakes at Randwick.

In what will be her final campaign before retirement and over the far from ideal distance of 1400m, many believed this would be her biggest test before heading to the Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m), then the George Ryder (1500m) before her final farewell in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m).

Hugh Bowman positioned the super mare perfectly one off the rail in a midfield position.

Her long time rival, Happy Clapper, looked to control the race by taking the lead from the top of the straight after settling second behind Winx’s stablemate Tom Melbourne.

In typical fashion the champ ambled up to Happy Clapper before Bowman asked her to let down at the 200m mark.

From here Winx bolted away to win by 2.3 lengths eased down on the line.

The racing world now awaits the Chipping Norton Stakes at Randwick in a fortnight’s time.
