William Chisholm buys the Boston Celtics
March 22, 2025
The Boston Celtics have been sold according to Tim Reynolds and Jimmy Golen according to the Associated Press on Thursday. The new owner is William Chisholm, the managing partner for Symphony Technology Group.
The amount the Celtics have been bought for is making not only American sports headlines, but American business headlines too. During a time when the North American economy is not doing well due to Donald Trump’s controversial tariffs, the Celtics have been bought for $6.1 billion, which is the largest price anyone has paid for an American professional sports team.
The previous high was $6.05 billion, as that was the amount that Josh Harris bought the Washington Commanders for from Dan Snyder in July of 2023. Ironically, this sale had a basketball connection. That is because former Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson and his wife Cookie are part owners. Johnson is the 10th best basketball player all-time according to The Sporting Base, and is also part of the Los Angeles Dodgers ownership team.
The Celtics are the defending NBA champions as they defeated the Dallas Mavericks in five games this past June. Boston is currently second in the Eastern Conference with a record of 50 wins and 19 losses for a winning percentage of .725. The Celtics are only behind the Oklahoma City Thunder (57-12 with a winning percentage of .826) and the Cleveland Cavaliers (56-13 with a winning percentage of .812). Boston is led in scoring this season by six-time All-Star Jayson Tatum, who is averaging 27.1 points per game, 8.7 rebounds per game, and 5.9 assists per game.
