Why NBA All-Star Game was not worth watching

The NBA All-Star Game took place on Sunday at Gainbridge Field House in Indianapolis. The East beat the West 211-186, and I was more than pleased to let my co-worker Joel Beatton give his worthy insight on the professional sports all-star phenomenon I had no interest in even watching.

I know there have been quirky scoring rules for the NBA All-Star Game in the past, and it was great to see the stupid 24-point Elam Ending eliminated. However even the stoppage of the Elam Ending did not reduce the scoring because everybody tried to score and forget about the importance of defense. Whenever a team scores 200 points, it is simply not worth watching, because there needs to be some appearance of order and an attempt to play defense. Shouldn’t there be?

In his recent column, Donnovan Bennett of Rogers Sportsnet wrote the column on Tuesday, titled, “Why the NBA All-Star Game is broken and how to fix it.” I agree with Bennett that the game needs to be in the afternoon and in a format of the United States versus the World. That would build intrigue and interest.

Instead of the NBA All-Star Game, I watched the 2024 World Speed Skating Championships on Sunday, and the 2024 Scotties Tournament of Hearts (the Canadian National Women’s Curling Championship). I would also would have watched the Daytona 500 if it had not been postponed due to inclement weather. The NBA All-Star Game was not even on my radar.

While people still watch the MLB All-Star Game and the NHL All-Star Game in North America, nobody watches the NBA All-Star Game, and the NFL’s Pro Bowl with the silly flag football format and the fact that the players in the Super Bowl never participate because the game is a week before the biggest game of the year.
