‘We’ll sort it’: Happy Hunt working on Dragons extension, but Titans door stays ajar
June 1, 2024
Ben Hunt and the St George Illawarra transfer bosses have been hard at working thrashing out an extension deal, with the 34-year-old Red V captain now eager to close out his NRL career playing for the joint venture.
That doesn’t mean other options aren’t off the table though, with the Gold Coast Titans still shaping as a possible destination should Hunt’s Dragons talks fall apart.

The Titans have long been linked with Hunt, 34, who agitated for a move there after Anthony Griffin was sacked last season. Things have turned around under new coach Shane Flanagan, however, and Hunt—who has captained the club for several years—is now more eager than ever to put black pen to paper on a new deal.
Hunt is off-contract at the end of 2025 and eager to play on into his late 30s.
The Dragons have put together a preliminary 12-month offer, The Sporting Base has heard, but Hunt and the club aren’t settled on how much that next twelve months is worth; Hunt expects a little more coin. The extension disparity y has left Hunt open to testing open waters again, with all signs pointing to Des Hasler and his slowly building new Titans project should the 34-year-old eventually turn away from St George Illawarra.
“I am not closing the door on anything at all,” Hunt said when asked about moving back to Queensland to play on the Gold Coast, before adding that he is “happy at the Dragons” and expects that they’ll “we’ll work through it. I’m trying to focus on a few other things at the Dragons.. get [us] going in the right direction. We’ll sort it out.”

There have been no further talks since Hunt joined the Queensland camp for State of Origin earlier this week. He’s shaping to start as the Maroons number nine in game one.
