Weekend Wrap: The Best of The Weekend’s Sport
December 17, 2018
In this segment, we bring you a look at the biggest sporting moments of the past weekend.
This week was one for the football fans, with upsets, great matches and blow-out scorelines.
Southampton vs Arsenal
When my mate told me I should discuss the Southampton vs Arsenal game in the Weekend Preview segment, which looks ahead to the biggest sporting matches of the weekend, I laughed.
Well, I should’ve listened.
Southampton won 3-2 against the Gunners.
This ended Arsenal’s 22 game unbeaten streak.
Braces from Danny Ings and Henrikh Mkhitaryan had scores level, but an 85th minute goal from Charlie Austin sealed the unlikely victory for the home side.
Heading into the match, Southampton were in lowly 19th position.
This win now sees them out of the relegation zone, while Arsenal remain in 5th, 11 points behind league-leaders Liverpool.
Liverpool vs Manchester United
Liverpool remained a point ahead of Manchester City after Matchday 17.
The Reds got a win against City’s arch-rivals Manchester United.
1-1 at the break, thanks to Sadio Mane and Jesse Lingard, Xherdan Shaqiri scored a second half double, resulting in a 3-1 scoreline.
The match had United’s former boss, and manager god, Sir Alex Ferguson fuming in the stands.
Pressure is building on boss Jose Mourinho, with his team in sixth position.
United are 8 points behind Arsenal, and a massive 19 points behind Liverpool.
Football Giants Win Big
Barcelona and Bayern Munich secured big wins over the weekend.
Barcelona had a field day, putting five past Levante, and conceding no goals in their La Liga fixture.
Messi scored another career hat-trick, with Suarez and big centre back Pique getting a goal each.
In the Bundesliga, Bayern also held a clean sheet and scored four goals in a dominant display against Hannover.
The ‘German Giants’ had 72% of the ball, and took 33 shots, compared to Hannover’s 3.
Three of the goals were shared with wing backs, Joshua Kimmich and David Alaba, as well as winger Serge Gnabry.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a Bayern game without Robert Lewandowski being on the scoresheet as well.
Dan Hooker Zombie-Like
Dan ‘The Hangman’ Hooker didn’t win on the weekend in his bout against Edson Barboza.
In fact, he never really looked like he would win.
Yet his performance was a huge talking point following UFC on Fox 31, this weekend.
That’s because despite taking an unbelievable amount of damage, he just kept coming forwards.
So impressive was Hooker’s toughness, it drew praise from President of the UFC, Dana White.
“He showed a ton of toughness tonight, a ton of heart,” White said.
But the amount of damage Hooker was allowed to take before collapsing to a body shot drew criticism from fans, commentators and White as well.
