February 1, 2019

By Lindsay

In this segment, we take a look at the upcoming weekend’s biggest sporting contests.

This weekend has UFC and EPL action, test cricket and a little thing called the Super Bowl.

Super Bowl LIII

This weekend sees one of the biggest events of the sporting calendar take place.

The 53rd instalment of the Super Bowl sees the New England Patriots vs the Los Angeles Rams.

The Patriots finished with a regular season record of 11-5.

The Rams, on the other hand, finished with a regular season record of 13-3.

The Patriots postseason road to the Super Bowl saw them first dispatch of the Chargers 41-28, and then the Chiefs in a thriller that ended 37-31.

The Rams postseason first saw them take out the Cowboys 30-22, before narrowly defeating the Saints 26-23.

It’s the ninth Super Bowl for veteran quarterback Tom Brady, who’s record currently stands at 5-3.

It’s the first Super Bowl for 24 year old Rams quarterback Jared Goff.

Test Cricket

Test cricket action takes place over the weekend.

England are playing the West Indies in their second of three matches.

The West Indies trounced England by 381 runs in the first test.

England only managed an embarrassing 77 in their first innings in that match.

After the first day of the second match, England are all out for 187, with the West Indies at 0-30.

The second of two tests between Australia and Sri Lanka started today and continues across the weekend.

Australia won the first match by an innings and 40 runs as they embarrassed the visitors.

So far in this second test, Australia has elected to bat and lost three quick wickets.

Man City vs Arsenal

Manchester City dropped five points behind league-leaders Liverpool in their last match, where they lost 2-1 to lowly Newcastle.

They could’ve been further off the pace if Liverpool had won instead of drew against Leicester.

This weekend City will be hoping to bounce back from their surprise loss, when they play fourth-placed Arsenal.

The Gunners are on a two game win streak in the EPL, they first took down Chelsea 2-0 before defeating Cardiff City 2-1.

They did however get convincingly beat by Manchester United in the FA Cup last weekend.

City were on an eight game winning streak before the Newcastle match earlier this week.
