VON HAUKE’S GOLDEN BENDIGO WIN

CLIFF Brown was concerned it was looking like history was going to repeat itself in the Bendigo Golden Mile with Von Hauke, but on this occasion, the gaps opened up and he went on to victory.

Brown referred to last year’s Bendigo Golden Mile when Von Hauke was held up and finished an unlucky fourth.

This time Von Hauke was again buried in amongst the field, but his jockey, Harry Coffey, found a gap with 250 metres to go and they surged home to win.

“I thought history was going to repeat itself,” Brown said after the win.

Although Von Hauke is a six-year-old gelding, Brown said he was getting better with age.

“He’s a lovely horse and seems to be getting better,” he said.

Brown said physically Von Hauke had matured, but mentally, he was better, but still wasn’t quite there yet.

“He still over-raced a little. He’s far better than he was,” Brown said.

Coffey said Von Hauke was the best horse in the race and rode him accordingly.

“He’s got a great little turn of foot. He was the best horse in the race and he needed the speed on.

He’s starting to furnish even though he has a high rating,” Coffey said.

Brown will take Von Hauke to Brisbane for the winter carnival and didn’t rule out a tilt at The Stradbroke.
