Viktor Hovland of Oslo, Norway has won the 2023 BMW Championship at Olympia Fields Country Club in Chicago, Illinois. On Sunday, he posted a four-round score of -17 to win his fifth PGA Tour title of his career.
Hovland beat 2022 Masters champion Scottie Scheffler of Ridgewood, New Jersey and 2022 United States Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick of Sheffield, England by two strokes each. Scheffler and Fitzpatrick both shot four round scores of -15.
In the first round on Thursday, Hovland posted a score of one-under-par 69. That was followed by a second round Friday score of two-under-par 68, a third round Saturday score of five-under-par 65, and a fourth round Sunday score of nine-under-par 61.
Hovland had one eagle during the tournament. That came on the first hole in round three.
It is Hovland’s fourth round score of 61 that has the golf world buzzing. According to Patrick McDonald of CBS Sports, Hovland set the course record at Olympia Fields when the course has hosted a PGA Tour event or major. He had 10 birdies and one bogey on Sunday. He birdied the first, third, fifth, 10th, 11th, 12th, 14th, 15th, 17th and 18th holes, and bogeyed the seventh hole.
This was Hovland’s second PGA Tour title of 2023. He previously won the Memorial Tournament in a playoff in June over American Denny McCarthy of Takoma Park, Maryland. Hovland’s other PGA Tour titles came at the 2020 Puerto Rico Open, followed by back-to-back titles at the 2020 and 2021 World Wide Technology Championship in Mayakoba, Mexico. Heading into the 2023 Tour Championship in Atlanta next weekend, Scheffler is the leader at -10, with Hovland in second at -8.
