Miami Heat star guard Victor Oladipo of Silver Spring, Maryland is set to have surgery on his right quadriceps tendon according to the Associated Press on Wednesday. The loss of Oladipo is a big blow to the Heat’s playoff hopes, but the injury also has significant long-term ramifications. That is because Oladipo is to go through extensive rehabilitation, and due to the fact he is an unrestricted free agent in the offseason, he will probably not get the contract he was hoping to receive. One must realize Oladipo already turned down a two-year deal worth $45.2 million with the Houston Rockets in February.
It has been a busy season for Oladipo, as he has played 33 games with the Indiana Pacers, Houston Rockets, and Heat. He averaged 19.8 points per game, 4.8 rebounds per game, 4.6 assists per game, a .408 field goal percentage, a .326 three-point percentage, and .754 free-throw percentage.
When Oladipo was traded from the Rockets to the Heat at the trade deadline, he was considered the second-best player traded by the Sporting Base. Oladipo was only behind center Nikola Vucevic, who was traded from the Orlando Magic to the Chicago Bulls.
Both of Oladipo’s all-star seasons came while with the Pacers. In 2017-18, he led the NBA with 2.4 steals per game.
Now the Heat will need production from others if they hope to return to the NBA Finals for a second straight season. This also means that Duncan Robinson and Tyler Herro will share the workload duties at shooting guard. Both were excellent for the Heat in the 2020 NBA postseason. Robinson averaged 11.7 points per game, and Herro was even better, as he averaged 16 points per game.
