Trial Review: Horses That Caught The Eye At The Trials This Week 7/10
October 7, 2025

Analysis from the most anticipated trial on Australian soil, with Ka Ying Rising stepping out in preparation for the Everest. We also take a look at how the other Everest and King Charles contenders performed and some horses to follow out of the rest of the morning’s trials.
Ka Ying Rising had the eyes of the racing world on him this morning, and that included our team.
We have assessed the trial and given our thoughts on how the star went below.
Ka Ying Rising
There will be mixed reviews for the Hong Kong superstar’s trial at Randwick on Tuesday morning. He sweated up in his lone parade in the horse of the theatre, indicating he will be better for the run and the experience. Purton pinged him out of the outside gate and he found to lead fairly comfortably before speedster Overpass kicked up inside him after 400m. He stuck to the middle of the track on the turn and always looked comfortable working to the line to finish 0.23L 3rd behind an impressive Linebacker and Overpass.
He was neither shaken up at any stage nor under a tight hold, but it was interesting to see Purton give him a slap over the shoulder 200m past the post, which may suggest his jockey thought he required a bit more of a searching gallop. Trainer David Hayes stated he will improve off that effort with Purton giving him a pass mark but indicated he will need to improve before the Everest.
I’m not sure if I want to be jumping in any queues to take $1.5 in an Everest as there is a long list of overseas superstars that have come to Australia and haven’t produced what we’ve seen back home, particularly in their first race start.
The Others:
Linebacker
The O’Shea & Charlton 4yo stole the show settling 3rd behind Ka Ying Rising and Overpass before cruising up inside them to draw away for a 0.07L win. He has trialled superbly before being disappointing on Race Day in the past and comes off set backs this prep but will no doubt be a runner of interest no matter where he lands 1st up.
Overpass
Showed his usual early speed to settle inside Ka Ying Rising and went to the line just ahead of him albeit under slightly more vigorous hands and heels riding. A definite pass mark but connections may be slightly concerned how much easier Ka Ying Rising did it the opening 200m of the race as he does race best finding the lead.
Mr Brightside, Joliestar, Fangirl and Angel Capital all had quiet trials ticking along in the middle of their preps.
Caballus
The Baker 5yo was ultra impressive settling near the rear in his 1050m trial before finding the line in stylish fashion to finish 1.1L 2nd to Ostraka. He was thrown in the deep end and slightly disappointing in the Manikato and Sydney Stakes in the spring before winning the Listed Ortensia at Scone. It will be interesting to see where he lands 1st up.

Girl Guidance
The O’Shea & Charlton 3yo really impressed stepping out for his first ever trial. He settled behind the leader and showed great acceleration when slapped over the shoulder on the turn before brilliantly sprinting away for a dominant 5.7L win. The time compared well to some much more seasoned spring contenders earlier and the morning and was 0.66s quicker than the next fastest maiden trial. We will likely get another look at him at the trials before he lobs in maiden company.Â
