Trial Review: Horses That Caught The Eye At The Trials This Week 10/4

Sydney trials took place at Canterbury this week. We’ve black booked 5 runners that either look set for a promising end to the Sydney Autumn Carnival or are well on track for the Brisbane Winter Carnival.

Scintilla

The rising Bridge mare looks to be flying after recording a 0.9L 2nd to the speedy Amor Victorious in her 900m Canterbury trial. McEvoy landed her in the 1-1 and when he eased her across heels at the 300m it was clear she was travelling extremely well without being pressured whilst Amor Victorious had been given a couple of cracks with the whip. She cruised through the line in a real eye-catcher.

Austmarr

The Godolphin 5yo is always one to look out for in Listed to G2 level mares races and she looks to be going as well as ever after a nice 0.7L 2nd  to Galaxy winner Private Harry. She jumped from the outside gate and took a few strides to get going before eventually crossing the speedy Waller recruit. She was headed at the top of the straight but I thought she did well to hold onto a 0.7L margin with the 3rd horse finishing 1.9L further back. The trial was easily the fastest over 900m on the morning. She can take a run or two to get going but she looks in great order and there will be no Private Harry where she lands 1st up.

Hurstville Zagreb

The lightly raced O’Shea & Charlton 4yo looks to be furnishing nicely after recording a 0.3L victory in his first trial back from a spell. He settled outside the speedy Zealously and looked much stronger over the final furlong. He has always seemed like the type that will get better with racing and will be one to look out for as he works his way up to a mile this prep.

Beiwacht

The Waller/Godolphin sprinter was a surprise starter in his Canterbury trial as he was in the market for the G2 Arrowfield the following day. He led comfortably before Nash eased him out to the centre of the track and made light work of the likes of King of Sparta and El Costello. You’d assume his new target is the G1 All Aged on Day 3 of The Championships. Whilst he will face a tougher field in open WFA company, he looks better suited controlling a solid 1400m tempo compared to taking on 3yo sprinters in the Arrowfield. If he gets the right map he could be a bet at around a double figure price.

Golden Straand

The Matthew Smith 4yo has always been a promising type currently holding the Warwick Farm 1200m record. He looks to be putting it all together after his 0.6L 2nd to Lady of Camelot over 900m at Canterbury. He settled 2nd and was a couple of lengths off the Waterhouse/Bott Golden Slipper winner on the turn before making steady ground the whole way up the straight. Important to note that finished 3.3L ahead of quality sprinter Angel Capital. He still holds a BM rating of only 74 and would likely be a bet wherever he heads 1st up.
