Top five rookies from Week 4 of 2021 NFL season

We are now one month into the 2021 National Football League regular season, and rookies are starting to make a name for themselves throughout the league. Here are the top five offensive performances by rookies on winning teams from week four.

5) Jody Fortson–Kansas City Chiefs

Jody Fortson, the 25-year-old native of Buffalo, New York, had a second touchdown catch in two games on Sunday in a 42-30 Kansas City win over the Philadelphia Eagles. While it was a great day for Patrick Mahomes and Tyreek Hill, Fortson also got his name on the scoresheet with a two-yard touchdown catch from Mahomes with 50 seconds left in the first half to put the Chiefs up 21-13. With the win, Kansas City improved to a record of two wins and two losses. Despite the victory, the Chiefs are still in last place in the AFC West.

4) Justin Fields–Chicago Bears

The Bears’ first round pick, 11th overall, out of Ohio State, won his first game of his NFL career as a starting quarterback. Fields completed 11 of 17 passes for 209 yards, along with three rushes for nine yards as the Chicago Bears beat the Detroit Lions 24-14. With the win, the Bears also improve to 2-2. In the coming weeks the Bears may need more production from Fields, as their star running back, David Montgomery left the game with a knee injury, and is expected to be out one month.

3) Ja’Marr Chase–Cincinnati Bengals

There is no doubt that the Bengals’ first round pick, fifth overall, is developing chemistry with Cincinnati quarterback Joe Burrow. On Thursday, Chase had six catches for 77 yards in a 27-24 Cincinnati win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. On the season, Chase has 17 catches for 297 yards and four touchdowns. More impressively, the Bengals are in a first place tie in the AFC North alongside the Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers at three wins and one loss.

2) Kadarius Toney–New York Giants

The native of Mobile, Alabama, who was the New York Giants’ first round pick, 20th overall, in the 2021 NFL Draft, had six catches for 78 yards, in the Giants’ surprising 27-21 overtime win over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. In his first career NFL start, Toney averaged 13 yards per catch. The University of Florida product was second on the Giants in receiving yards. Toney only trailed Kenny Golladay, who had 116 yards.

1) Michael Carter–New York Jets

The native of Navarre, Florida was the New York Jets’ fourth round pick, 107th overall, from the University of North Carolina, in the 2021 NFL Draft. Now it appears Carter has moved up to number one on New York’s depth chart at the running back position. On Sunday, Carter recorded his first career touchdown with just under five minutes left in the first half in the Jets’ stunning 27-24 win over the Tennessee Titans. The touchdown put the Jets on the scoreboard, but still trailed 9-7 at the time. Carter finished the day with 13 carries for 38 yards.
