Tony Finau of Salt Lake City, Utah has won his sixth PGA Tour event. On Sunday, he won the 2023 Mexico Championship.
Finau shot a four-round score of -24. He beat the defending champion, and world number one, Jon Rahm of Barrika, Spain, by three strokes. Rahm finished at -21.
Finau had a first round score of six-under-par 65. That was followed by a seven-under-par 64 in round two, another six-under-par 65 in round three, and a five-under-par 66 in round four. In all, Finau had 27 birdies and three bogeys.
Rahm meanwhile had a marvelous third round on Saturday. There he shot 10-under-par 61, as he had six birdies on the front nine, and four birdies on the back nine. However, Rahm did record a key double bogey on the ninth hole on Saturday, along two bogeys on the 16th hole over the weekend that prevented him from defending his championship.
The fact that Finau and Rahm were the two best golfers in the field in 2023 was zero surprise. That is because they were the two top golfers a year ago as Rahm was at -17 and Finau was at -16.
The prior success for Finau and Rahm in Mexico is why I liked them to contend in 2023, and in fact we were right. Hopefully you read our accurate tips before making your betting selections!
Rahm still remains at number one in the world with 10.7372 average points. He has 0.4446 more average points than Scottie Scheffler of Ridgewood, New Jersey, who has 10.2926 average points in second place. Finau meanwhile is now in 11th place, with 4.8718 average points.
This was Finau’s first PGA Tour win of 2023. His five prior wins came at the 2016 Puerto Rico Open, the 2021 Northern Trust, the 2022 3M Open, the 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic, and the 2022 Houston Open.
