Tony Finau wins 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic

For the second straight week, Tony Finau of Salt Lake City, Utah is a champion on the PGA Tour. A week after winning the 3M Open in Minnesota last Sunday, Finau won the 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic at the Detroit Golf Club on July 31.

Finau became the first golfer to win two straight tournaments on the PGA Tour since Brendon Todd of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 2019. Three years ago, Todd won the Bermuda Championship on November 3, 2019 and then the Mayakoba Golf Classic in Mexico on November 18, 2019. The difference between what Finau and Todd accomplished however is that Finau won two PGA events in back-to-back weekends, while Todd won two PGA events in a three week span.

Finau defeated Americans Patrick Cantlay and Cameron Young, along with Canadian Taylor Pendrith by five strokes. Finau shot a four-round score of -26. He had a first round score of -8, a second round score of -6, third round score of -7 and a fourth round score of -5.

Finau had eight birdies in round one, six birdies in round two, seven birdies in round three, and six birdies and one bogey in the fourth round. He did not have his first bogey of the tournament until the 11th hole on Sunday. On three holes, Finau recorded a birdie in every round. They were the 10th, 14th and 17th holes.

According to the Associated Press, accuracy was a major reason why Finau was victorious. Of the 72 holes in the event, he hit 66 greens in regulation. It was a great tournament for The Sporting Base as we selected Finau and Cantlay as two of our three best tips for the week.
