Tomas Martin Etcheverry wins 2026 Rio Open

Tomas Martin Etcheverry of La Plata, Argentina has won the 2026 Rio Open. Etcheverry defeated Alejandro Tabilo of Chile in the final, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4.
Etcheverry was one of two ATP players on Sunday to win an ATP 500 tournament. The other was Carlos Alcaraz of Spain, who won the 2026 Qatar Open.
In the final, Etcheverry, the eighth seed, had 14 aces. He also won 72% of his first serve points.
Etcheverry actually lost the first set in three of his five matches, but came back to win the match. In the first round, Etcheverry beat Francisco Comesana of Argentina, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in an all-Argentinian matchup. Then in the semifinals, Etcheverry defeated Vit Kopriva of the Czech Republic, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6.
Etcheverry’s second round win came over Colombian qualifier Vilius Gaubas, 7-6, 6-4. Etcheverry then beat Portuguese lucky loser Jaime Faria in the quarterfinals, 7-6, 6-4.
This was Etcheverry’s first ATP title. He had reached three finals in the past. All prior finals were on clay court, like the Rio Open. At the 2023 Chile Open, he lost 6-7, 7-6, 6-2 to Chile’s Nicolas Jarry in the final. At the 2023 United States Clay Court Tennis Championship in Houston, Etcheverry lost 7-6, 7-6 to 2022 and 2024 United States Open semifinalist Francis Tiafoe of the United States. Then at the 2024 Lyon Open in France, Etcheverry lost 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard of France.
Etcheverry is the third Argentinian to win the Rio Open. The first was Diego Schwartzman, the 2020 French Open semifinalist, who beat Spain’s Fernando Verdasco, the 2009 Australian Open semifinalist, in the 2018 Rio Open final, 6-2, 6-3, The second was Sebastian Baez, who beat Mariano Navone of Argentina, 6-2, 6-1, in the 2024 Rio Open final, and then defended his Rio Open title in 2025 by beating Alexandre Muller of France in the final, 6-2, 6-3.
