The Minnesota Timberwolves faced elimination on Tuesday. However, they came out with a gritty performance on the road at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, and as a result defeated the Dallas Mavericks 105-100.
All five starting Timberwolves reached double digits in scoring. Shooting guard Anthony Edwards of Atlanta, Georgia, the first overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, had a double-double with 29 points and 10 rebounds. Power forward Karl-Anthony Towns of Edison, New Jersey, the first overall pick in the 21015 NBA Draft had 25 points. Point guard Mike Conley of Fayetteville, Arkansas had 14 points, center Rudy Gobert of Saint-Quentin, France had 13 points, and small forward Jaden McDaniels of Federal Way, Washington had 10 points. Like Edwards, Gobert had a double-double as he had 10 rebounds.
The Timberwolves’s most notable quarter was the third. At halftime, the game was tied at 49 apiece. However, Minnesota outscored Dallas 29-24 in the third quarter before an even fourth quarter where both Minnesota and Dallas scored 27 points each.
With the game tied at 86 points apiece, the Timberwolves made some key baskets down the stretch. Gobert made a key throw and had a three foot dunk. Towns made three three-pointers from a combined total of 74 feet. Edwards made two field goals, Conley made a free throw, and Sixth Man of the Year Naz Reid of Asbury Park, New Jersey completed the scoring with 11 seconds left with a layup from three feet.
Game five returns to Minnesota on Friday. The winner of the Western Conference Finals will play the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals. The Celtics swept the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals.
