The Minnesota Timberwolves have named Sachin Gupta of Boston, Massachusetts as their new executive vice president of basketball operations. Gupta takes over from Gersson Rosas of Bogota, Colombia, who was released from his duties on Wednesday according to Michael Kaskey-Blomain of CBS Sports.

Gupta has a computer science and electrical engineering degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He then received his masters in business administration from the Stanford Graduate School of Business in California.

Since 2006, Gupta has worked in the NBA. Prior to that he contributed to the NBA portion of the ESPN website. Among his duties in professional basketball, Gupta has been the special advisor of the Houston Rockets from 2006 to 2013, the vice-president of basketball operations with the Philadelphia 76ers from 2014 to 2016, and the assistant general manager of the Detroit Pistons from 2018 to 2019. When he joined the Timberwolves in 2019, Gupta was the executive vice-president of basketball operations.

The fact that Rosas is no longer with the Timberwolves should not be considered a huge surprise. Minnesota actually regressed in their on-court production. With Rosas in charge, they had a record of 42 wins and 94 losses for a poor winning percentage of .309.

While in charge of Minnesota, Rosas drafted Anthony Edwards first overall in the 2020 NBA Draft. Edwards is expected to be an integral shooting guard for the Timberwolves for the next decade, and complement center Karl-Anthony Towns.

It will now be interesting to see if Gupta will make a change at the coaching position, or stick with Chris Finch. The expectation is that Finch will remain on as head coach until Gupta no longer has the interim tag to his new position.
