Minnesota Timberwolves select Anthony Edwards first overall in the 2020 NBA Draft

The Minnesota Timberwolves selected University of Georgia Bulldogs guard Anthony Edwards of Atlanta, Georgia, first overall in the 2020 National Basketball Association draft. Edwards averaged 19.1 points per game in 32 games this past year, and becomes the first Bulldogs player ever to be selected first overall in the NBA Draft.

The Bulldogs have had four first overall picks in the NFL Draft, but never in the NBA Draft. They were halfback Frank Sinkwich by the Detroit Lions in 1943, halfback Charley Trippi by the Chicago Cardinals in 1945, end Harry Babcock by the San Francisco 49ers in 1953, and quarterback Matt Stafford by the Lions in 2009.

With the recent acquisition of Ricky Rubio in a trade with the Oklahoma City Thunder, it is expected that Rubio will be the starting point guard for Minnesota in 2020-21. The Timberwolves already having D’Angelo Russell, the second overall pick of the 2015 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers, at shooting guard, which means that Edwards is expected to move from guard to small forward when the season commences next month. Minnesota also has another first overall pick in their starting five as Karl-Anthony Towns, the Timberwolves’ number one selection from the 2015 NBA Draft, is their starting center.

At only 19 years of age, Edwards was the SEC Freshman of the Year, and only decided to play one season at the NCAA level before declaring his NBA eligibility. One area of weakness Edwards may have is his shooting percentage from three-point range. Last season with the Bulldogs, it was only at .294, as he only made 72 three-point shots in 245 attempts.
