The Minnesota Timberwolves made franchise history on Thursday by recording their largest playoff win. In game six of the Western Conference semifinals, the Timberwolves won by 45 points as they clobbered the Denver Nuggets 115-70. With the win, the Timberwolves forced a seventh and deciding game in the Western Conference semifinals.
The Timberwolves’s prior largest playoff win was 28 points. On April 22, 2003, the Timberwolves beat the Los Angeles Lakers 119-91 in game two of the Western Conference semifinals. The 45-point win was also the largest playoff win against a defending champion in NBA playoff history. The 70 points were also the fewest points the Nuggets scored in a playoff game. Denver’s offense was so bad, they only scored nine points in the entire fourth quarter.
Five Timberwolves reached double digits in points. Shooting guard Anthony Edwards of Atlanta, Georgia led the way with 27 points. Small forward Jaden McDaniels of Federal Way, Washington had 21 points. Point guard Mike Conley of Fayetteville, Arkansas had 13 points, and power forward Karl-Anthony Towns of Edison, New Jersey and sixth man of the year Naz Reid of Asbury Park, New Jersey had 10 points each.
Three Timberwolves reached double digits in rebounds. Center Rudy Gobert of Saint-Quentin, France had 14 boards, while Towns had 13 and Reid had 11.
Game seven of the Timberwolves and Nuggets series will take place on Sunday. The winner of the Timberwolves and Nuggets seventh game will play the winner of the Oklahoma City Thunder/Dallas Mavericks series. The Mavericks are currently up three games to two heading into game six on Saturday night.
