In one of the biggest French Open upsets of all-time, Thiago Seyboth Wild of Marechal Candido Rondon, Brazil, the 172nd ranked player in the world, knocked out the world number two, Daniil Medvedev of Russia, the 2021 United States Open champion, 7-6, 6-7, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The fact that Medvedev lost this match was stunning when you consider the fact he won the Italian Open leading up to Roland Garros earlier this month, and the fact that he has won five tournaments in 2023 already. The odds of Seyboth Wild pulling off the upset over Medvedev today was a staggering +900.
This was Seyboth Wild’s first ever singles win at a grand slam tournament and only the second time he has played a main draw singles match at a major. The first time came at the 2020 United States Open, where he lost in straight sets to Daniel Evans of Great Britain, 6-2, 6-1, 7-6.
Despite the extraordinary low ranking, Seyboth Wild does in fact have one career title. It came on clay. Seyboth Wild beat world number four Casper Ruud of Norway, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 in the final of the 2020 Chile Open. In addition to beating Ruud in Chile, Seyboth Wild beat 2019 Cordoba Open champion Juan Ignacio Londero of Argentina in the second round and five-time ATP champion Cristian Garin in the quarterfinals.
Medvedev was one of three grand slam singles champions to lose a first round match on Tuesday. The other two players came on the women’s side as the 13th seed and 2021 French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova lost 6-2, 6-4 to Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine, and the 18th seed and two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka of Belarus lost to 2019 United States Open champion Bianca Andreescu of Canada, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
