The Plunge’s Black Book: Horses Running At Randwick & The Valley 23/10

A great day of spring racing with the Cox Plate at The Valley and The Invitation at Randwick. I’m keen on a Sydney superstar south of the border, a well placed stayer and a 3yo looking to turn the tables after a narrow defeat last start.

Randwick Race 7 – Cepheus

Cepheus is a horse I black booked way back in August when he was 1st up over 1400m in the Spring Preview and flashed home from last to finish a length away.

Being a European import with form over longer distances I was looking forward to him getting over further ground. I was a little surprised when connections chose to keep him at 1500m races his next two starts where he was disappointing.

Last start he got out to 2000m and settled just behind the speed and was strong right through the line when 3rd behind the in form Think It Over and Shared Ambition. It wasn’t until the final 50m where Think It Over was able to put him away. I could not envision any of today’s rivals pressing those two horse under weight for age conditions.

Moonee Valley Race 9 – Anamoe

In what shapes up as one of the strongest Cox Plates in recent history I can’t go past 3yo superstar Anamoe with only 49.5kg on his back. Top tier 3yos have had a great record in this race over the years. He is untested over 2000m but his best wins have come over 1400m-1600m and I see no reason why he can’t stretch his brilliance out over this trip.

He will need to be at his very best to beat the likes of Verry Elleegant, Zaaki, Probabeel and Mo’unga. Verry Elleegant and Zaaki have shown a tendency to not handle the way of going at Flemington and Caufield which never bodes well for the tight expansions of Moonee Valley but punters should always be wary of writing off champions off one bad run.

Anamoe will get back from the outside gate and start his run early around the outside with no weight. If he gets the trip he will take a power of stopping late.

Randwick Race 8 – Coastwatch

Backing Coastwatch to turn the tables on Hilal in the Bondi Stakes. The two ran right away from the rest of the field over 1500m in the Stan Fox at this track and fought out the finish with Hilal taking the victory by 0.5L.

Many would argue the fact that Hilal is better suited at the mile after Coastwatch raced on the speed and Hilal settled back in the field and raced on strongly hence Hilal’s short quote but I didn’t like the way the Hawkes 3yo over raced from back in the field.

Coastwatch has been ultra consistent this prep and I think he can be rewarded with a victory to close it out.
