Randwick Race 5 – Coastwatch

Coastwatch brings superior form to the G2 Stan Fox Stakes after a nice 3rd in the G1 Golden Rose behind Into the Congo and Anamoe. Two starts back he was a dominant winner of the G3 Ming Dynasty after being edged out by a nose from Tiger of Malay in a race where he easily accounted for one of today’s main danger in Brigantine.

The map reads fantastic with J Mac having the option to control or sit just off what looks sure to be a slow tempo. I expect him to be too strong here.

Randwick Race 8 – Alegron

Both Head of State and Profondo were ultra impressive in the Gloaming Stakes and deserve their positions in the market but after identifying Alegron as one of the runs of the day and specking him in the Victorian Derby market, I can build a case for him bridging the 4L difference from the Gloaming.

The two main arguments for that are the extra 200m and increase in tempo. Going from 1800m to 2000m is a big step for these 3yos who are all untried at the distance and many of these will fail. Looking closely at Alegron’s Gloaming run and we can be sure he won’t be one of those.

The Teofilo gelding was 3 wide without cover at the back of the field from the moment they jumped but was still strong enough to record the 2nd quickest final 600m behind the race winner and was a stride short of running into 3rd place.

I expect there to be a little more speed in this race which will suit the Godolphin gelding. He will need a touch of luck but if he gets it expect him to be strong late.
