The Plunge’s Black Book: Horses Running At Randwick 2/10
October 1, 2021
Randwick provides us with 3 high quality G1’s with the Flight Stakes, Epsom and Metropolitan. I’m sticking with a quartet of runners that should continue to run well!

Randwick Race 6 – Masked Crusader
I was all aboard the Masked Crusader train 1st up at Caufield where he flashed home from last to cash in. I was a little surprised to see him looking a run short in The Shorts where he presented with a wooly coat and was unsuited by a on-pace favouritsim. When it comes to Everest contenders, this is B grade so he will want to be putting them away.
He should improve for this one. The step up to 1200m and what looks to be a solid tempo which he shouldn’t be too far back on in a small field leaves him in a great position to get a win on the board heading into the Everest.

Randwick Race 7 – Mallory
The fillies step up to 1600m here and what we learned from the G2 Tea Rose is that there is not a lot between Four Moves Ahead, Swift Witness and Mallory. Of the 3 I do believe Mallory looks most like a strong miler and there’s a strong argument that she should’ve beaten Four Moves Ahead after running onto heels at the top of the straight and being squeezed twice in the concluding stages.
I am wary of an out and out miler emerging and being strong late. This could come in the form of a Von Trapp or Fangirl.

Randwick Race 8 – Riodini
Riodini gave subscribers a great shout at decent each way odds last start when things panned out exactly how I predicted with Riodini leading and kicking into the straight only to be run down by Verry Elleegant late. It’s crazy to think that handicap conditions allow the strong gelding to carry only 51.5kg for this G1.
He’s not going to get a picnic in front but I do believe he will still control the race. $100-1 pop Ashman is a noted leader but is drawn two gates outside Riodini in 17. If Rachel King can do enough early work to keep Ashman from crossing she should be able to hold front spot and cruise across. I would be surprised if stablemate Discharged is instructed to kick up. Apart from that it’s hard to map anything wanting to take him on but strange things can happen with so many light weight chances.
If he can reproduce his last two run at WFA level he is going to give another great shout.
Tip: 2 Units Win Riodini @$4.8 withTopSport
Randwick Race 9 – Montefilia
I won’t be racing out to back Montefilia before any racing patterns have emerged on the day but if there is fairness for horses getting down the outside I believe Montefilia will be very hard to beat. I was taken by her run in the Kingston Town where she charged home from the rear to finish 2nd behind She’s Ideel who she meets 3kg better at the weights here.
We know she is tough and that she will run a strong mile and a half. Just needs a fair track and a touch of luck in running.
Tip: 2 Units Win Montefilia @$6
