Spain and Poland reach semifinals of 2022 ATP Cup

The biggest tennis story in Australia at the moment is the evolving one regarding Novak Djokovic’s entrance into the country. However, there is actual tennis at the moment in Sydney, with the world’s best players providing exceptional skill at the third ever ATP Cup.
So far Group A and Group D have wrapped up with Spain and Poland reaching the semifinals. Group B and Group C will be determined on Thursday.
In Group A, Spain went undefeated with wins over Chile, Serbia, and Norway. The Serbs, which won the 2020 ATP Cup over Spain, clearly missed the services of Djokovic. It has been a perfect week so far for Spain’s singles representatives, world number 19 Roberto Bautista Agut and world number 20 Pablo Carreno Busta, who are a combined 6-0.
Bautista Agut, the 2019 Wimbledon semifinalist, so far has beaten Chile’s Cristian Garin, 6-0, 6-3, Norwegian star Casper Ruud, 6-4, 7-6, and Dusan Lajovic, 6-1, 6-4. Carreno Busta, the 2017 and 2020 United States Open semifinalist, so far has beaten Alejandro Tabilo of Chile, 6-4, 7-6, Viktor Durasovic of Norway, 6-3, 6-3, and Filip Krajinovic of Serbia, 6-3, 6-4.
In Group D, Poland went undefeated with wins over Argentina, Greece and Georgia. Like Bautista Agut and Carreno Busta, Poland’s two singles players of Hubert Hurkacz and Kamil Majchrzak had a combined record of 6-0. Hurkacz had a breakthrough 2021 tennis season. He reached the semifinals of Wimbledon by bageling Roger Federer in a set during the quarterfinals. and also won the Miami Masters.
Hurkacz defeated Aristotelis Thanos of Greece with ease 6-1, 6-2, before beating Aleksandre Metreveli of Georgia, 6-7, 6-3, 6-1, and Argentinan star Diego Schwartzman, 6-1, 6-4. Majchrzak defeated Michail Pervolarakis of Greece 6-1, 6-4, before beating Aleksandre Bakshi of Georgia, 6-1, 6-1, and Federico Delbonis of Argentina, 6-3, 7-6.
