Simona Halep and Pablo Carreno Busta win 2022 National Bank Open
August 16, 2022

The champions of the 2022 National Bank Open (also known as the Canadian Open) have been decided. In Toronto, Ontario on Sunday, the women’s final took place, with the 15th seed, Simona Halep of Romania defeating Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. Then in the men’s final on Sunday from Montreal, Quebec, Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain defeated the eighth seed, Hubert Hurkacz of Poland in the final, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
In the women’s final, Halep won 65% of her points on her second serve. Haddad Maia only won 54% of her points on her second serve. The factor of second serve points was the main reason why Carreno Busta was victorious as well. Carrreno Busta won 71% of his second serve points, while Hurkacz only won 35%.
This was Halep’s third career WTA title in Canada. She previously beat 2017 United States Open finalist Madison Keys of the United States to win the 2016 Rogers Cup in Montreal, 7-6, 6-3. Halep then beat 2017 United States Open champion Sloane Stephens of the United States to win the 2018 Rogers Cup in Montreal, 7-6, 3-6, 6-4.

This was the first time since 2001, that the men’s final and the women’s final of the Canadian Open went the full three sets in the same year. In 2001, Andrei Pavel of Romania beat Patrick Rafter of Australia 7-6, 2-6, 6-3 in the men’s final, while Serena Williams beat Jennifer Capriati 6-1, 6-7, 6-3 in the women’s final. In 2015, the Canadian Open men’s and women’s finals both went into the third set. Andy Murray of Great Britain beat Novak Djokovic of Serbia 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in the men’s final. Reigning Olympic gold medalist Belinda Bencic of Switzerland was tied with Halep going into the third set seven years ago, but Halep pulled out with a leg injury, trailing 3-0 in the final set.
The 2001 Canadian Open title was the first of three Canadian Open titles for Williams in her career. She announced her intention to retire at the end of the 2022 United States Open while in Toronto earlier this past week.
