Canada wins 2022 Davis Cup
November 29, 2022

Canada’s excellence in men’s team tennis in 2022 continued on Sunday. Ten months after winning the 2022 ATP Cup over Spain in Australia, ironically Canada beat Australia in Spain to win the 2022 Davis Cup.
In the final from Malaga, Spain, Denis Shapovalov beat Thanasi Kokkinakis 6-2, 6-4, and then Felix Auger-Aliassime defeated Alex de Minaur, 6-4, 6-3. Prior to beating Australia in the finals, Canada beat Germany in the quarterfinals on Thursday, and then Italy in the semifinals on Saturday.
Australia has won 28 Davis Cup titles, the second most all-time. They only trail the United States, which have won 32 times. However, Australia has not won the Davis Cup since 2003, when they beat Spain 3-1 at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne. That year, Australia got singles wins from two-time major champion Lleyton Hewitt of Adelaide, two-time major finalist Mark Philippoussis of Melbourne, and a doubles victory from Wayne Arthurs of Adelaide, and Todd Woodbridge of Sydney.
In an unfortunate circumstance on Sunday, Canadian tennis fans did not have a chance to see one of the greatest moments in Canadian tennis history. That was because there was a serious problem with the television transmission from the World Feed due to the rain in Spain, and Canadian viewers were given irregular updates from Rogers Sportsnet commentators Rob Faulds and Robert Bettauer in the Toronto studio.
This was the second time Canada reached the Davis Cup Final. The first time was in Spain in 2019, where they lost to the home nation of Spain. Canada becomes the 16th nation to win in the 110-year history of the Davis Cup. Canada also becomes the second nation to win the Davis Cup and ATP Cup in the same year, following Russia in 2021.
