Steelers sign Dwayne Haskins from the Washington Football Team

In an interesting signing before the 2021-22 National Football League season is officially over, the Pittsburgh Steelers have signed troubled quarterback Dwayne Haskins of Highland Park, New Jersey to a contract according to the Associated Press. Haskins had spent the last two seasons with the Washington Football Team, before being released on December 28.

While with Washington, Haskins was unable to follow simple coronavirus protocol rules. He was seen at his girlfriend’s party without wearing a mask and made a reservation for a family friend while staying at the team hotel when Washington was playing the New York Giants in New York. As a result, Haskins was fined $44,833 and lost his captaincy.

When Haskins was struggling on the football field, he was released. In winning only one of six games during the regular season, Haskins was less productive than Alex Smith, Kyle Allen, and Taylor Heinicke. He only won one of six starts at quarterback, (Smith was 5-1), and had seven interceptions, compared to five touchdowns.

Haskins was initially Washington’s first-round pick, 15th overall out of Ohio State in 2019. He is not the first resurrection project the Steelers have taken on at the quarterback position. Six years ago the Steelers received harsh criticism among their own fans for signing Michael Vick to backup Ben Roethlisberger after spending 21 months in prison for his involvement in a dogfighting ring at his Virginia property. Vick was productive for the Steelers that season while Roethlisberger was out with a knee injury, but the signing was not popular among fans who were animal lovers.
