Six notable NFL trades to begin 2025 season

There have been two significant National Football League trades to begin the month. The Washington Commanders acquired wide receiver Deebo Samuel Sr. of Inman, South Carolina from the San Francisco 49ers, and the Pittsburgh Steelers acquired wide receiver D.K. Metcalf of Oxford, Mississippi from the Seattle Seahawks. Here are six more interesting NFL trades over the last 24 hours.
Geno Smith
The quarterback from Miramar, Florida was traded from the Seattle Seahawks to the Las Vegas Raiders for a third round pick in 2025. In Vegas, Smith will be joining his former coach, Pete Carroll. The Raiders will be Smith’s fifth NFL franchise. He has previously been with the New York Jets (2013 to 2016), the New York Giants (2017), the Los Angeles Chargers (2018), and the Seahawks (2020 to 2024). The two-time Pro Bowler (2022 and 2023), Smith completed 407 passes in 578 attempts in 2024 with 4320 passing yards, 21 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. He also had 53 rushes for 272 rushing yards and two touchdowns. The first rushing touchdown was for 34 yards and came in a 26-20 Seahawks win over the Denver Broncos on September 8, and the second rushing touchdown was for 13 yards and was the game-winning touchdown in a 20-17 Seahawks win over the San Francisco 49ers on November 17.
Christian Kirk
The wide receiver from Scottsdale, Arizona was traded from the Jacksonville Jaguars to the Houston Texans for a seventh round pick in 2026. Kirk had spent four seasons with the Arizona Cardinals (2018 to 2021), and the last three seasons in Jacksonville (2022 to 2024). This past season, Kirk had 27 catches for 379 yards and one touchdown with the Jaguars.
Kenny Pickett for Dorian Thompson-Robinson
This was a trade involving backup quarterbacks. The Eagles acquired Dorian Thompson-Robinson of Columbia, South Carolina from the Cleveland Browns with a fifth round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft for Kenny Pickett of Oakhurst, New Jersey.
Thompson-Robinson was with the Browns the last two years. In 2024, he completed 61 of 118 passes for 440 passing yards and six interceptions. Thompson-Robinson had 21 rushes for 122 rushing yards.
Pickett was with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2022 and 2023, and Eagles in 2024. This past season, Pickett completed 25 of 42 passes for 291 passing yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He also had nine rushes for 15 receiving yards and another major score. The rushing touchdown was for one yard and came in a 41-7 Eagles win over the Dallas Cowboys on December 29.
Joe Thuney
The guard from Centerville, Ohio was traded from the Kansas City Chiefs to the Chicago Bears for a fourth round pick in 2025. He was with the New England Patriots from 2016 to 2020, and the Chiefs since 2021. While with the Patriots, Thuney won Super Bowls in 2017 and 2019, and two more with the Chiefs in 2023 and 2024. He was selected to the Pro Bowl the last three seasons with the Chiefs.
Jonah Jackson
The 2021 Pro Bowl offensive lineman from Media, Pennsylvania was traded from the Los Angeles Rams to the Bears for a sixth round pick in 2025. Jackson spent his first four seasons with the Detroit Lions.
Laremy Tunsil
The tackle from Lake City, Florida was traded from the Houston Texans to the Washington Commanders with a fourth round pick in 2025. In return, the Texans get four draft picks (third and seventh picks in 2025, and second and fourth picks in 2026). Tunsil is joining his third NFL team. He was with the Dolphins from 2016 to 2018, and the Texans from 2019 to 2024, where he was selected to five Pro Bowls (2019, 2020, 2022, 2023, and 2024).
