Six NFL players traded before the start of the season

With the National Football League regular season set to start on Thursday night, there were half a dozen trades over the last 10 days. Let’s take a look at six players who were traded.Â
Cameron ThomasÂ
The defensive end from San Diego, California was traded from the Arizona Cardinals to the Kansas City Chiefs on August 26 for a seventh round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. In 2023 with Arizona, Thomas had 22 combined tackles (13 solo tackles and nine assisted tackles), three tackles for a loss, one quarterback hit, one pass deflection, one fumble recovery for two yards and one touchdown. He has spent two seasons in Arizona.Â
Brandon Codrington
The cornerback from Raleigh, North Carolina was traded from the New York Jets to the Buffalo Bills with a seventh round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft for a sixth round pick in the 2026 Draft on August 27. Undrafted, Codrington has not played a NFL game yet.Â
Peyton HendershotÂ
The tight end from Lizton, Indiana was traded from the Dallas Cowboys to the Kansas City Chiefs for a conditional seventh round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft on August 27. In 2023, he had four catches for 38 yards. Hendershot has played two seasons for the Cowboys, and had 15 catches for 141 yards and two touchdowns. In 2022, he was twice named among the top five rookies of the week.Â
Elijah MoldenÂ
The cornerback from West Linn, Oregon was traded from the Tennessee Titans to the Los Angeles Chargers for a seventh round pick in 2026 on August 28. Molden played the last three seasons with the Titans. In 2023, he had 73 combined tackles (47 solo tackles and 26 assisted tackles), one tackle for a loss, one interception for 44 yards and one touchdown, four pass deflections, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery for one yard.
Taylor HeinickeÂ
The quarterback from Atlanta, Georgia was traded from the Falcons to the Chargers for a sixth round pick in 2025 on August 28. He previously played one season with the Houston Texans in 2017, one season with the Carolina Panthers in 2018, three seasons with Washington from 2020 to 2022, and one season with the Atlanta Falcons in 2023. Heinicke completed 74 of 136 passes for 890 passing yards and five touchdown passes last season. He had 15 rushes for 124 rushing yards and one touchdown.
John Ridgeway III
The defensive tackle from Bloomington, Illinois was traded from the Washington Commanders to the New Orleans Saints with a sixth round pick in 2025 for a seventh round pick in 2025 on August 28. He played the last two seasons in Washington. In 2023, Ridgeway III had 31 combined tackles (16 solo tackles and 15 assisted tackles) and one pass deflection. The pass deflection came in a 24-16 Washington win over Atlanta on October 15.
