Seahawks sign defensive end Aldon Smith
April 17, 2021

The Seattle Seahawks signed defensive end Aldon Smith of Kansas City, Missouri to a one-year contract on Thursday according to Bob Condotta and Adam Jude of the Seattle Times. Like the signing by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of running back Giovani Bernard also on Thursday, the financial terms of the deal were not released.
Smith is joining his fourth National Football League franchise. He previously played with the San Francisco 49ers, Oakland Raiders, and Dallas Cowboys. Last year in Dallas, Smith had 48 combined tackles (38 solo tackles and 17 assisted tackles), 14 quarterback hits, five tackles for a loss, two pass deflections, and two fumble recoveries for 78 yards and one touchdown. Smith’s 78 yards on fumble recoveries in 2020, led the NFL.
There is no doubt that Smith was an unexpected spark plug on the Cowboys team last year. His touchdown came in a dominant 30-7 Cowboys win over the Bengals on December 13. Smith picked up a Trayveon Williams fumble and ran the football 78 yards into the end zone for the major score for his first career NFL touchdown. At the time, the Cowboys went up 10-0.
One reason why Smith’s successful 2020 season was unexpected is because he did not play for four full seasons due to a lengthy suspension for various legal issues. They included an arrest for driving under the influence and a hit-and-run in 2015 which led to 20 days in prison, vandalism, possession of marijuana, illegal possession of a gun, and biting the wrists of his fiancee.
Smith also recorded a safety in his NFL career. That came in his rookie season of 2011, in a 25-19 San Francisco win over the Detroit Lions.
