Seahawks name Mike Macdonald new head coach
February 2, 2024

According to Bryan DeArdo of CBS Sports on Thursday, the Seattle Seahawks have named Mike Macdonald of Boston, Massachusetts. At age 36, Macdonald becomes the youngest active National Football League head coach. Ironically, Macdonald is replacing Pete Carroll of San Francisco, who at age 70, was the oldest head coach in the NFL at the time of his reassignment to team advisor on January 10.
Macdonald joins the Seahawks after nine seasons with the Baltimore Ravens. He was Baltimore’s coaching intern in 2014, the Ravens defensive assistant in 2015 and 2016, the Ravens defensive backs coach in 2017, the Ravens linebackers coach from 2018 to 2020, and the Ravens defensive coordinator from 2022 to 2023.
Macdonald has vast experience working with the Harbaugh brothers. In his time with Baltimore, Macdonald worked with Ravens head coach John Harbaugh. The one year that Macdonald was not with the Ravens was in 2021. That season, Macdonald was the defensive coordinator of the University of Michigan, where Macdonald worked under John’s younger brother and current Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh.
The Wolverines are one of two National Collegiate Athletic Association teams Macdonald has coached at over the years. He was with the University of Georgia as their graduate assistant in 2010, and their defensive quality control assistant from 2011 to 2013.
It should be noted that Macdonald is one of two former Ravens to be hired in a key NFL position since the Ravens were eliminated from the NFL playoffs on Sunday. The Los Angeles Chargers named Joe Hortiz of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as their new general manager on Tuesday. Hortiz had been the Ravens’s director of player personnel the last five seasons.
