Saints sign quarterback Andy Dalton
March 31, 2022
The New Orleans Saints have signed quarterback Andy Dalton of Katy, Texas according to James Rapien of Sports Illustrated. The terms of the contract are one year, and worth $3 million. Dalton could make as much as $6 million.
The Saints become Dalton’s fourth National Football League franchise. He previously played nine seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals from 2011 to 2019, and one season each with the Dallas Cowboys (2020), and Chicago Bears (2021). Last year in Chicago, Dalton completed 149 passes in 236 attempts for eight touchdowns and nine interceptions. He also had 16 rushes for 76 yards. While with the Bengals, Dalton was selected to three Pro Bowls in 2011, 2014 and 2o16.
It is expected that Dalton will backup Jameis Winston for the 2022 National Football League regular season. The Saints re-signed Winston to a two-year deal worth $28 million on March 21. Winston will be entering his third season with the Saints. When Winston was initially signed by the Saints, there was this feeling he would be the next starting quarterback in Tampa Bay when legendary Saints quarterback Drew Brees retired. Brees retired following the 2020 NFL season.

Throughout last season, Dalton shared the quarterback duties in Chicago with Justin Fields, who was Chicago’s first round pick, 11th overall, in the 2021 NFL Draft out of Ohio State. The Bears have decided to go with Trevor Siemian of Danbury, Connecticut as their backup to Fields in 2022. Last season Siemian ironically played for the Saints, and started four contests. He completed 108 of 188 pass attempts for 11 touchdowns and three interceptions. Siemian also had nine rushes for 20 yards and another major score. In addition to playing with the Saints in 2021, Siemian played three seasons with the Denver Broncos from 2015 to 2017, and another season with the New York Jets in 2019.
