According to Anthony Franco of MLB Trade Rumors on Wednesday, the Kansas City Royals  will be without second baseman Jonathan India of Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Ryan Bergert of Canton, Ohio for the rest of the season. India had labrum surgery on Tuesday according to Franco, and Bergert had Tommy John Surgery on Wednesday.
India was in his second season with the Royals after playing four seasons to begin his Major League Baseball career with the Cincinnati Reds. The 2021 National League Rookie of the Year has a tendency to be hit by a pitch with frequency. In 2021, India was hit 23 times which led the National League, and he has been hit 83 times in his career.
The 2026 season was a struggle for India, however. He only batted .167 with eight hits in 48 at bats. With India hurt, Nick Loftin of Corpus Christi, Texas is the Royals every day second baseman at the moment. He is batting .276 with eight hits in 29 at bats.
Bergert, who is from the same American city where the Football Hall of Fame can be found, did not pitch in the Major Leagues this season. Last year, he shared his time with the San Diego Padres and Royals. In 19 games, Bergert had a record of two wins and two losses with an earned run average of 3.66. In 76 1/3 innings pitched, he gave up 61 hits, 31 earned runs, eight home runs and 35 walks, to go along with 73 strikeouts, and a WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) of 1.26. Bergert’s wins came in a 4-3 Padres win over the New York Yankees on May 5, 2025, and in a 12-1 Royals win over the Chicago White Sox on August 27, 2025.
The Royals are last in the American League Central at the moment. Their record is 12 wins and 18 losses.
