Rival clubs quietly told Crichton plans to staying with the Roosters

Several eager NRL suitors have been given the heads up that Angus Crichton wants to—and will, in all likelihood—stay with the Sydney Roosters for a further two years, if negotiations go how he’s expecting.

The Bulldogs, Rabbitohs, and Dragons have all been making in-roads with the 28-year-old second-row superstar in recent weeks but got the news over the weekend.

Crichton has been informally speaking to those three interested Sydney clubs as well as the tricolours (which remain his first choice, The Sporting Base understands) and the Panthers, though the Penrith avenue was all but closed for the State of Origin star after Isaiah Papali’i recently agreed to move to the foot of the mountains.

The Roosters are currently paying Crichton around $600,000 this year to play in Bondi and any added years to his deal will net him around that again through to when he’s 30. Sydney and Trent Robinson have been quite firm on a two-year deal, which is a little shorter season-wise than some of the rival offers floating around in the background.

The 28-year-old originally thought he was being squeezed out for David Fifita to join.

Whether that was true or not will never really be proved now, with Fifita sensationally backflipping on a signed Roosters deal to stay with the Titans through his contract; a reversal that left Crichton the top target on the market.

Canterbury were and still are closest to the superstar’s signature should Sydney either bungle talks (unlikely) or decide they want to back future players over Crichton (also unlikely at this stage).
