A total of 54 holes have now been completed at the 2023 United States Open in Los Angeles, California. We have a share of the lead as Wyndham Clark of Denver, Colorado and Rickie Fowler of Murrieta, Georgia are both at -10.
On Saturday, Fowler shot a score of even par 70. He had three birdies and three bogeys. Fowler birdied the first, seventh, and 13th holes, and bogeyed the second. fifth, and 18th holes.
Clark shot a score of one-under-par 69. He birdied the first, third, 13th, and 18th holes. Clark also bogeyed the 11th, 12th, and 17th holes.
The fact that Fowler and Clark are tied for the lead is a little surprising because Fowler missed a short, little par putt on the 18th hole. That prevented him from being the outright leader heading into Sunday.
Clark meanwhile showed signs of great resiliency. He had a difficult stretch from the 10th to the 12th holes. On the 10th hole, Clark had to settle for par as his golf ball bounced over the hole. On the 11th, Clark bogeyed as he just missed his par putt. Then on the 12th, Clark ran into troubles in the bunker. However key birdies on the 13th and 18th holes, have Clark tied for the lead.
Two more golfers who have won a major in the past are in contention. In third place is Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy at -9, and in fourth place is American Scottie Scheffler at -7. McIlroy, previously won the 2011 United States Open, 2012 and 2014 PGA Championship, and the 2014 British Open. Scheffler previously won the 2021 Masters. The finish for Scheffler on Saturday was noteworthy as he birdied the 16th and 18th holes, and eagled the 17th hole.
