Raiders name Pete Carroll new head coach
January 25, 2025

According to Jacob Camenker of USA Today, the Las Vegas Raiders have named Pete Carroll of San Francisco, California their new head coach on Friday. When Carroll coaches the Raiders in September of 2025, he will make National Football League history as the oldest head coach ever at 74 years old. The previous oldest NFL head coach was Romeo Crennel of Lynchburg, Virginia, who was 73 years old when he coached the Houston Texans in 2020.
This will be Pete Carroll’s fourth NFL head coaching job. He was previously with the New York Jets (1994), the New England Patriots for three seasons (1997 to 1999), and the Seattle Seahawks for 14 seasons (2010 to 2023).
On January 10, 2024, the Seahawks had reassigned Carroll into an advisor role. However, Carroll felt he had very little to do with the Seahawks organization, and was not consulted very often during the regular season on football related decisions. Ironically, when the Seahawks hired Mike Macdonald of Boston, Massachusetts as their new head coach, he became the youngest head coach in the NFL at age 36.
Carroll was extremely successful as a NFL head coach. In 291 games, he had a record of 170 wins, 120 losses and one tie for a winning percentage of .586. Carroll’s NFL coaching highlight was winning the Super Bowl in 2014. The Seahawks clobbered the Denver Broncos 43-8.
In addition to coaching at the NFL level, Carroll has a wealth of head coaching experience in College Football. From 2001 to 2009, he was the head coach for the University of Southern California Trojans. There he had an overall record of 97 wins and 19 losses.
