TRAINER Nick Ryan intends to make use of his sprinter Winnasedge preference for the Caulfield track after the sprinter won his fourth race at track from five starts and his first Group win when he won the G3 Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m).
Ryan said the obvious next start for Winnasedge is the G3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on July 25.
They only need to look back two years to know that winning the two races is an achievable feat as Recommendation, who finished sixth, achieved that feat two years ago.
Ryan said Winnasedge had always been a nice horse and deserved to win a race like that.
Ryan said Winnasedge had always been a good horse and showed with his placing in the Red Anchor Stakes as a three-year-old he had the capacity to compete at the G3 level.
“To do it in weight-for-age company is great. He’s a good horse and he got the job done,” Ryan said.
The win provided a welcome return to Melbourne racing for under-rated jockey Luke Currie who took a month off for a family vacation in Florida.
Winnasedge is raced by a syndicate headed by Racing Victoria photographers Ross and Brett Holburt.
They also bred Winnasedge and they also raced his sire Cliff’s Edge. Winnasedge is the first stakes winner sired by Cliff’s Edge.
Winnasedge won by a half-length from Bellatrix Star who was first-up for the year and showed she still had something to offer.
There was less than half a length which separated the second and sixth horse.
