Giga Kick will have a third crack at The Everest after the 2022 winner was confirmed for Coolmore’s slot in the $20 million sprint at Royal Randwick on Saturday 17 October. Dylan Gibbons has been booked to ride the Clayton Douglas-trained seven-year-old.
Racing.com reported the confirmation on Wednesday morning, and Racenet reported that Coolmore was the slot holder to secure the gelding. Coolmore’s slot had been open since Golden Slipper winner Guest House was ruled out of the spring with a soft tissue injury, Racing NSW said.
Giga Kick’s Everest record
Giga Kick won The Everest as an unbeaten three-year-old in 2022, running in James Harron’s slot under Craig Williams, as racing.com reported at the time. Two years later he was beaten into second by Bella Nipotina, and he sits fifth in our ranking of every Everest winner.
He is owned and bred by Jonathan Munz’s Pinecliff Racing. Racing.com noted that Munz also raced Caulfield Guineas winner Super Seth, now one of the standouts on Coolmore’s stallion roster.
Gibbons won the Group 1 Flight Stakes at Randwick on Saturday 3 October aboard Pinecliff’s Global Goal.
His spring so far
Giga Kick resumed with 10th, beaten 4.7 lengths, in the Group 1 Moir Stakes at Sandown on 5 September, then ran eighth when Jimmysstar won the Group 1 Manikato Stakes at Caulfield on 27 September. Douglas said the horse needed the run first-up and had taken good improvement from the Manikato, according to racing.com.
He is also the defending Champions Sprint winner, having won that Group 1 on a Heavy 9 track on the final day of the Flemington carnival last November. Racing.com said his chances would rise sharply if he gets a heavy track again. He has won more than $15 million in prize money.
The Everest field so far
Giga Kick joins Ka Ying Rising, Ninja, Headwall, Blue Door, Spicy Martini, Savvy Hallie, Tempted, Jimmysstar and Joliestar in the 12-horse race. Racenet reported that 10 of the 12 runners are now locked in, with Jimmysstar widely expected to run in TAB’s slot. That would leave the James Harron and Yulong slots as the only ones yet to be filled, with Group 1 winner Angel Capital the leading option for Yulong, according to Racenet.
Final declarations close at 10am on Tuesday 13 October, under the official race conditions, and our Everest field guide tracks every slot.
