‘Push me out in a wheelchair’: Munster staying at Storm as long as he can

The Perth Bears have been dealt a hammer blow in their bid to find a marquee signing, with Cameron Munster declaring the Melbourne Storm will have to “push me out in a wheelchair” as he looks to stay a one-club player.

With Jonah Pezet walking out the door to join the Parramatta Eels (and then the Brisbane Broncos a year later), many had been questioning whether Munster would be staying in the Melbourne setup.

There had been rumours he was going to break his contract to join the Bears in 2027.

But, according to the man himself, that’s never really been on the table.

“I will honour my contract and the club doesn’t want to let me go,” Munster said ahead of the Ashes in England.

“I love the club, I love ‘Bellyache’ [Craig Bellamy], and I love what the club is all about. I know you want to jab me with a metal prod and get something out of me, but I’m still signed for two more years. I will fulfil my contract.”

Munster admitted he’d seen all the speculation, including him being linked to Perth or to a swap to fullback for the Storm, and laughed them both off. “There has been speculation for ages,” the Storm five-eighth declared. “If they don’t want me any longer than those two years, and they want to push me out in a wheelchair, then that’s what they will have to do.

“I have spoken to Melbourne and, even if there was an inkling of the door being ajar to leave, they don’t want me going. They don’t know where [the exit speculation] came from. It didn’t come from me.”

Munster had the perfect example lined up for why he hadn’t considered a move either, adding in that Papua New Guinea had “never” been on the cards. “I could have left for big money to go to the Dolphins,” he said. “I’m not going to PNG with no tax. They could offer me the same amount of money the Dolphins offered me. I didn’t take it then, so I won’t take it now.”

“Nothing changes, so it’s business as usual. I will be 33 years old by the end of this contract, and I am guessing that after that, whether I re-sign or go somewhere else, that will be my last contract. I have the reality of knowing that it will be my last deal playing professional rugby league, which is sad, I guess, in a way, but that’s what happens the older you get.

“Hopefully I can play some good footy in the next couple of years.”
