Pirates trade pitcher Johan Oviedo to Red Sox

There was a Major League Baseball trade made on Thursday between the Boston Red Sox and Pittsburgh Pirates according two Jorge Castillo of ESPN. The Pirates have traded starting pitcher Johan Oviedo of La Habana, Cuba, and prospects Tyler Samaniego and Adonys Guzman to the Red Sox for outfielder Jhonstynxon Garcia of San Fernando de Apure, Venezuela, and prospect Jesus Travieso. Samaniego and Travieso are pitchers, and Guzman is a catcher.
Oviedo is joining his third Major League Baseball team. He spent three seasons each with the St. Louis Cardinals and Pirates. In 2025, Oviedo pitched nine games for the Pirates. He had a record of two wins and one loss with an earned run average of 3.57. During 40 1/3 innings pitched, Oviedo gave up 26 hits, 16 earned runs, six home runs and 23 walks, to go along with 42 strikeouts, and a WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) of 1.22.
Oviedo’s first win of the season came on August 20 in a 2-1 Pirates win over the Toronto Blue Jays. Oviedo pitched five innings and only gave up a single run (home run to George Springer). Oviedo then gave up two earned runs in five innings on August 30 in ironically a 10-3 Pirates win over the Red Sox.
Oviedo missed the entire 2024 MLB season with Tommy John Surgery. During the 2023 MLB season, Oviedo pitched the best game of his entire career. On August 28, 2023, he threw a complete game two hit shutout in a 5-0 Pirates win over the Kansas City Royals. Oviedo threw 112 pitches of which 73 pitches were strikes.
