The New England Patriots have made a significant move in National Football League free agency. On Tuesday, they signed wide receiver Stefon Diggs of Gaithersburg, Maryland to a three-year deal worth $69 million according to Rogers Sportsnet.
The Patriots are the fourth National Football League team Diggs has played for. He has previously played five seasons with the Minnesota Vikings (2015 to 2019), four seasons with the Buffalo Bills (2020 to 2023), and one season with the Houston Texans (2024).
This past season, Diggs caught 47 passes for 496 receiving yards and three touchdowns. He only played eight games because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
Diggs’s most notable NFL seasons came from 2020 to 2023 while with the Buffalo Bills. In these four seasons, he was selected to the Pro Bowl each year. In 2020, Diggs led the National Football League in receptions (127), and receiving yards (1535).
Through the deal Diggs will be making an average of $23 million per year. He is currently the 15th highest paid wide receiver in the NFL. The highest paid receiver is Ja’Marr Chase of the Cincinnati Bengals, who is currently making $40.3 million per season.
This is also a statement signing by the Patriots. They have only won four times in each of the last two seasons, and now have a genuine offensive weapon. With the signing comes some genuine questions. How will Diggs respond from a serious knee injury and how quickly will Patriots quarterback Drake Maye and Diggs develop chemistry? Time will tell, but we are seeing a Patriots team genuinely trying to make improvements to get out of the AFC East basement.
