Opinion: Kyler Murray should be the Vikings starting quarterback
March 14, 2026
National Football League free agency is continuing. On Thursday, one of the most notable NFL free agents to switch teams was Kyler Murray of Bedford, Texas who went from the Arizona Cardinals to the Minnesota Vikings.
Murray is only going to be making $1.3 million in Minnesota according to Tom Schreier of zonecoverage.com. One must remember, the Arizona Cardinals are already paying Murray $36 million after cutting him, so money for Murray is simply not a problem.
Now the legitimate question is will Murray start with the Vikings this season or be the backup to J.J. McCarthy? The Vikings have already made a colossal organizational error in deciding not to keep Sam Darnold in last year’s offseason. All Darnold did for the Seahawks this past February was win the organization’s second Super Bowl in franchise history.
In my opinion, Murray should be the immediate starter in Minnesota. Murray has the potential of developing great chemistry with wide receiver Justin Jefferson. This past year, Jefferson only had two touchdown catches all season long, as he was unable to build satisfactory chemistry with McCarthy.
Murray is joining his second NFL franchise after seven seasons with the Cardinals, where he was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2020 and 2021. In Arizona, Murray has great initial chemistry with DeAndre Hopkins.
This past season, Murray completed 110 passes in 161 attempts for 962 passing yards, six touchdown passes and three interceptions. He also had five rushes for 29 rushing yards and one touchdown rush. In the fifth week of the season, Murray suffered a season ending foot injury.
