Opinion: Cox Plate On The Move?
January 23, 2023
Could Australia’s most famous weight-for-age race, the Cox Plate, be on the move from its traditional slot in late October to late November?
That was the controversial topic raised last week after Racing.Com announced that Racing Victoria and the Moonee Valley Racing Club were seriously looking at the proposal.
The reason being is that there is a believe that it would help to extend the Spring Carnival by two weeks and the running of the Cox Plate would be its grand finale.
Racing traditionalists were up in arms against the proposal but not everyone is against it.
Australia’s first Lady of Racing Gai Waterhouse said on Racing.Com she couldn’t understand why Racing Victoria would want to tamper with its magical spring carnival.
Astute trainer Mick Kent said that if the move was made, Peter V’Landy’s would immediately put a $8 million weight-for-age race over 2000 metres on the same day.
Cox Plate winning trainer Tony McEvoy though said on RSN on Monday morning that he was behind the proposal.
McEvoy said he believed there would have to be strong reasons for racing administrators to go ahead with the move and he was happy to back them in.
