The Boston Celtics and Golden State Warriors are reportedly very interested in small forward Trey Murphy III of Durham, North Carolina. There are general rumours that Murphy III might be on the trade block because the New Orleans Pelicans acquired small forward Benedict Mathurin from the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday.
Murphy III has spent the last five seasons with the Pelicans. However, there is a belief that New Orleans is going into a change of direction and rebuilding a little bit more.
The Celtics would be interested so they could improve their starting five. There is no doubt that on paper the New York Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers are one paper the best teams in the Atlantic Division, and the Toronto Raptors could be improved with the possible addition of Kawhi Leonard. If the Celtics were to acquire Murphy III, expect him to take over the small forward position, and the newly acquired Paul George would replace Baylor Scheierman at shooting guard.
The Warriors are in the process of just trying to get younger, and at the age of 26, Murphy III would definitely be part of that plan. The average age of the Golden State Warriors starting five is 36 years old!
In 2025-26, Murphy III averaged 21.5 points per game. He had 5.7 rebounds per game, 3.8 assists per game and 1.5 steals per game. He had a field goal percentage of .470, three point percentage of .379, and free throw percentage of .886. On February 4, Murphy III had a career high 44 points for the Pelicans in an overtime loss to the Milwaukee Bucks.
